Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the significant correlation and the significant influence between students’ reading anxiety and their reading comprehension achievement at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. The type of this research used quantitative research with a correlation design. Cluster sampling technique was used in this study to randomly select 11 classes as research samples. A total of the population were 370 students, and the sample were 111 students from 4 classes. There were two instruments in collecting the data questionnaire and test. Questionnaire for reading anxiety, to measure students’ reading anxiety. Test for reading comprehension, to measure students reading comprehension achievement. The descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data in this study. The findings of this study showed that there was no significant correlation (r = -0.038) was lower than r-table (.195). Then, the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was .694 was higher than 0.05. Thus, that there was no significant correlation between the students’ reading anxiety and their ability in reading comprehension achievement. Because there was no significant between each variable, the influence between reading anxiety and reading comprehension could not contributed. Keywords: achievement, anxiety, comprehension, reading
