Abstract
The main purpose of the present study was to empirically investigate the possible correlation and the influence between students’ foreign language anxiety and English proficiency. The population of the research was twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri Sumatera Selatan Palembang, there were 99 students from the twelfth grade as the population in this research. 72 students were chosen as the sample by using convenience sampling. Furthermore, there were two variables in this research, the first one was students’ foreign language anxiety (variable X) and the second one was students’ English proficiency (variable Y). The student’s foreign language anxiety score was taken from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire developed by Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope (1986) containing 33 items. Meanwhile, the students’ English proficiency was taken by having documentation. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) was 0.068 which means that p (0.068) was higher than 0.05. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. From the research finding, it could be concluded that there was no significant correlation between foreign language anxiety and English proficiency. It means that students’ foreign language anxiety was not a dominant factor that affects English proficiency.
