Abstract
Parenting styles is one of the important factors in education especially for improving children's creative thinking skills. There are three parenting styles, namely authoritarian, democratic and permissive upbringing. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there was a relationship between the type of parenting style and students' creative thinking abilities. The design of this research is correlational. This study used a population of 115 students. Simple random sampling technique used to obtain a sample of 30 students. The study period was in January 2019. Data collection techniques used were questionnaires to determine the type of parenting and test to determine students' creative thinking abilities. Data analysis used SPSS version 23.0 for Windows. The results showed that parenting applied to parents in the democratic parenting category was 66.6%, permissive parenting was 20% and authoritarian parenting was 13.3%. The relationship between democratic parenting and creative thinking skills of students of class VII in SMP Negeri 1 Muara Sugihan Banyuasin district has a correlation of 0.722. Authoritarian parenting with students' creative thinking abilities has a correlation of 0.387. Permissive parenting and creative thinking skills students have a correlation of 0.330. Of the three parenting styles, democratic parenting is a good parenting style to be applied in improving students' creative thinking abilities
