Abstract

The aims of the study were to identify the level of students speaking anxiety that experienced by the students in academic year 2015, 2016, and 2017 of international class of Islamic Economic and Business Faculty at State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang and to find out the students’ causes of speaking anxiety based on their perceptions. 41 students participated in this research and were asked to complete 17 items of questionnaire in 15 minutes. 10 students were interviewed to know the causes of speaking anxiety based on their perception. This study was a mixed research design which analyzed the students’ items. The result showed that there were students with a low level of speaking anxiety. Based on the themes analyzed, it showed that the causes of speaking anxiety consisted of students’ lack of linguistics competence, lack of confidence, lack of practice, lack of preparation, and fear of making mistakes and lecturer’s assessment. Finally, the findings showed that speaking anxiety as a separate phenomenon with its own causes.
