Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the classifications of idiomatic expression in The Secret Life of Pets, to analyze the most dominant classification of idiomatic expression, to find out the strategies of translating idiomatic expression used by the translator, and to analyze the most strategy of translating idiomatic expression used by the translator. This study was conducted through qualitative research with content analysis method. The data of this study are idiomatic expression obtained from both English and Indonesian subtitles in the film. Based on the result of the data analysis, there were four findings, namely (1) there are five classifications were found in The Secret Life of Pets, they are phrasal verbs, tournures, phrasal compounds, incorporating verbs, and idioms of 'institutionalized greeting'. The classification of idiomatic expression is by Adam Makkai, (2) the most dominant classification of idiomatic expression was phrasal verb with the percentage 63,7%, (3) there are strategies used by the translator in translating idiomatic expression, in this research strategies for idiomatic expression translation by Baker’s theory of translating idiomatic expression. They are using idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, by paraphrase, and by omission, and (4) the most dominant strategy of translating idiomatic expression is using idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form with the percentage 60,3%.
