Abstract
This article discusses the history of the entry and development of Islam in Indonesia that cannot be separated from the involvement of trading activities that have developed since the XI century. The results showed that the existence of these trade contacts caused the growth of Muslim community settlements in the coastal areas of the archipelago, so that in the end Islam has become a part that controls the hearts of the Indonesian people. The existence of Islam in Indonesia is inseparable from the culture of the local community. The struggle of Islam with a culture that is ingrained requires continuous adaptation without losing its original idea. Islam, when dealing with historical reality, will bring about new realities that are not only caused by internal struggles in responding to problems that arise, but also their involvement in the historical process that acts as the subjects that shape the circumstances of the times.
