Abstract
The aims of this study were to find out the categories of teacher talk used in classroom interaction of EFL class at SMAN 1 Air Kumbang and the categories of student talk used in classroom interaction of EFL class at SMAN 1 Air Kumbang. The participants of the study were one teacher of English at SMAN 1 Air Kumbang and students of XI IPS class. The writer investigated the teacher and student talk in classroom interaction of XI IPS Class. In this study, the writer used a qualitative research with a basic interpretative study which were used observations and interview for collecting the data. Meanwhile, in order to find out the category of teacher and student talk used in classroom interaction of EFL Class at SMAN 1 Air Kumbang, the data gained from observation and interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings showed that there were eight categories that appeared. 1) accept student feeling, 2) praise or encouragement, 3) accept or using student idea, 4) asking questions, 5) lecturing 6) giving direction, 7) criticizing or justifying, and 8) student talk respon.
