Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the English teacher’s perception on the challenges in teaching large classes and to provide the strategies of coping with the challenges in teaching large classes. The participants of the study were two English teachers at MTs Patra Mandiri Plaju in the academic year of 2018-2019. The writer investigated the case in two large classes, namely VIII B and IX C class. In this study, the writer used a qualitative case study, which used observations and interview technique for collecting the data. Meanwhile, in order to find out the challenges encountered by the English teacher in teaching large classes, the data gained from observation and interview were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings showed that there were five challenges encountered by the English teachers in teaching large classes: 1) discomfort; 2) control; 3) individual attention; 4) evaluation; 5) learning effectiveness. In addition, it was also found that there were two strategies employed by the English teachers in order to cope with the challenges in teaching large classes: 1) used variety of games or quiz; and 2) used pair work and group work.
