Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the use of English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) in Cambridge class undertaken in English subject located in MAN 3 Palembang. It examined students’ perceptions on the use of EMI in the 10th grade. Qualitative method with a case study was used in this research. In conducting this research, the data were collected from 3 students of Cambridge program. Classroom observasion and semi-structured interview was carried out to know how EMI in that class was used based on students’ perceptions. The result of this study showed that EMI was used fully in some activities and partially in others. Fully means using no native language at all and partially means use 50% or less of the course taught in English. The students were motivated to learn English lessons but it did not mean that they could execute it without difficulties. The study also revealed the students’ difficulty in understanding or grasping the material because of their lack of English proficiency and also their difficulty from teacher’s lack of English proficiency. The students preferred to use partial EMI in teaching-learning activity and they need to carried out full EMI gradually.
