Abstract
The number of students who do not meet the minimum mastery criterion shows that there are symptoms of difficulty in understanding Hess's Law. Students' difficulties are due to a lack of understanding and mastery of the material in studying Hess's Law. This study aims to analyze the difficulties experienced by students the factors that cause students' difficulties in understanding Hess's Law at SMAN 2 Sungai Selan. In this study, a qualitative approach with a case study method was applied. The sample used in the study was 35 students. The instruments in this study were using observation, description test sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interviews. Based on the results of the validation using an item reviewer by an evaluation expert, the instrument was declared feasible to use. The results showed that the difficulty experienced by students in understanding Hess's Law was 77.14% of students having difficulty in determining the enthalpy change (∆H) based on the energy level diagram, 60% based on the enthalpy difference of formation, and 100% based on the average bond energy. The factor causing student difficulties lies in internal factors, namely the aspect of interest with indicators of student interest in Hess's Law material as much as 58.57%, on the aspect of student ability by 57.14% with indicators of student knowledge, and aspects of students' physical condition by 47.14% with qualifications quite influential in student difficulties. Based on the findings, the student's difficulty lies in calculating the enthalpy change (∆H), and the factors causing the difficulty are in the students themselves.
