Abstract
Language learning strategies was one of the main factors that helped determined how the students gain proficiency with a second or foreign language. This research aimed to find out the significant correlation and influence between students’ language learning strategies and their writing essay achievement. The kind of this exploration used quantitative research with a correlation design. The population of this study was 61 students in the fifth semester of the academic year of 2022/2023 at the English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. The total sampling technique was used by the researcher to collect the data. The data were collected through a questionnaire of SILL to students of the English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang and writing essay achievement was taken from writing test and analyzed by two raters. The outcome represented that there was a significant correlation between cognitive strategies and students’ writing essay achievement with a p-value of .014, even though it was a weak correlation. In this research, cognitive strategies gave a 9.8% contribution to students’ writing essay achievement. The outcome of this study indicated that almost all of the students from the fifth semester of the English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang often use language learning strategies and the extremely dominant strategy they used was metacognitive strategies with a mean of 3.71.
