Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out what were the factors affecting students’ engagement in the classroom. The participants of this study were eight grade students at SMP N 54 Palembang. Qualitative method was used in this study. The data gained from observations and interview were analysed by using thematic analysis. The result of the study showed that most of students were not engaged because they were passive, bored, and were not enthusiastic during learning process. The findings indicated that there were some factors that affecting students’ engagement learning English in the classroom, they were: 1) teachers’ method; 2) teachers’ support; 3) large number of students; and 4) classroom condition.
