Abstract
The objectives of this study were to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety and the causes of students’ anxiety in speaking. The participants of this study was EFL students of State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang which consisted of 27 students. I used mixed method in this study. Public speaking class anxiety scale (PSCAS) was used to find out the level of students’ speaking anxiety. Meanwhile, in order to find out the factors that made students anxious in speaking, the data gained from observation and interview were analysed by using thematic analysis. The result showed that there were five factors caused the students’ anxiety in speaking. The factors were: 1) students lack of competence in English, 2) students lack of confident, 3) students lack of preparation, 4) Material difficulty and 5) Students’ personal problems such as mood ( a lots of problems) and unhealty condition (dizzy or cough).
