Abstract
udy were (1) to find out how the students used dictionary and (2) to find out the problems faced by students of English Education Study Program of UIN Raden Fatah Palembang in using dictionary in their process of learning. Case study was used in this study. The participants of this study were fourth semester students of State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang which consisted of 10 students. Purposive sampling was used in this study. In collecting the data, observation and interview were administrated to participants to explore how the students used dictionary and their problems in using dictionary. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data from interview and observation. The results showed that there were several phenomena about how the students used the dictionary in the process of learning. They were 1) students used various types of dictionaries, 2) students tended to used dictionaries when lecturer told them to do the exercises in reading, 3) students applied several skills in using the dictionary. The results also showed that were two problems faced by the students in using dictionary in the process of learning. The problems were: 1) The students had problems in printed dictionary, 2) The students had problems in online dictionary. In conclusions, the learners were hoped to know the information about dictionaries and the differences among them. The learner should be aware of their needs in order to guide them in using the dictionary that suitable to their needs.
