Abstract
The objectives of this study were 1) to find out the challenges of teaching and learning English in large class in English Education Study Program in State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang, and2) to investigate how the lecturers in English Education Study Program at State Islamic University of Raden Fatah Palembang coped with the challenge. The research was conducted in English Education Study Program at State Islamic University Raden Fatah Palembang.In this study, quota technique sampling was used to collect the participants. There were 3 lecturers from English Education study Program became my participants. These lecturers were selected based on some considerations such as: 1) they taught large classes 2) they were accessible 3) they were willing to be the participants of this study. In addition, qualitative research was used in this research and the data was collected by using observation and interview. The results of the study showed that there were challenges faced by the lecturer in teaching and learning in large classes such as; discomfort, control, individual attention, evaluation, and learning effectiveness. To cope with all the challenges, the lecturers grouped the students into large group, small group, group discussion and pair work.
